ASEAN’S GOLDEN CHANCE TO SAVE “THE GOLDEN LAND”:
SEEKING REGIONAL SOLUTIONS TO RESTORE DEMOCRACY AND PROTECT HUMAN RIGHTS IN MYANMAR

This essay competition aims to provide undergraduate students in Southeast Asia a platform to analyse the current situation in Myanmar and to provide sound recommendations for ASEAN and its member-states in pursuit of the restoration of democracy and the ability of the people to fully claim their basic rights and freedoms.


WHAT TO WRITE ABOUT?

The scope of entries must explore and analyse ASEAN’s role in addressing current social, political, cultural and economic situations in Myanmar. It challenges essays writers to define and analyse ways for ASEAN to protect human rights, fundamental freedoms and the restoration of democracy in Myanmar, as well as, articulate on issues that need to be prioritized.


WHO CAN JOIN?       

Southeast Asian undergraduate students currently enrolled in a Southeast Asia tertiary academic institution


WHAT ARE THE ESSAY REQUIREMENTS?

  • Analytical papers written in English within a maximum of 500-700 words (excluding title, references, notes)
  • Essays should be original and should not have been previously published elsewhere.
  • Essays must be written only by one person.
  • Font style and size: Times New Roman, 12 points, 1.5 interlinear
  • In-text citations and reference must be in APA (seventh edition) format
  • Essays should be submitted in MS Word (.doc/.docx)

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

Essays must be submitted online via the online registration page.

  • One person can only submit one entry.
  • Submissions are deemed final. Revised versions will not be accepted.
  • Deadline for Submission: 30 June 2021 (23:59 BKK Time)

SELECTION PROCESS:

  • Organizers’ Shortlist (1-15 July): AUN-HRE, SHAPE-SEA and NCHR will be reviewing and scoring all qualified entries based on the following criteria:
    • 40% Analysis
    • 30% Clarity and Structure
    • 20% Originality
    • 10% Relevance to the Theme
  • Popular Vote (16-30 July): The public will get a chance to vote for their top 3 favorite shortlisted essays. Entries will be posted on the SHAPE-SEA website. Names shall be deleted to ensure fairness and objectivity. The shortlisted essay with the most votes win!
  • Expert Panel’s Choices (16-30 July): An esteemed group of experts will be reviewing and decising on the top three essays for the competition. Deliberations will be based on the following criteria:
    • 40% Analysis
    • 30% Clarity and Structure
    • 20% Originality
    • 10% Relevance to the Theme

Experts’ Choice First Prize: Certificate of Recognition and cash prize of THB 10,000
Experts’ Choice Second Prize: Certificate of Recognition and cash prize of THB 7,000
Experts’ Choice Third Prize: Certificate of Recognition and cash prize of THB 5,000
Most Popular Vote: Certificate of Recognition and cash prize of THB 3,000

All Winning essays will be invited to present in a panel at an International Conference. Shortlisted essays will be given a Certificate of Appreciation and will be published on the SHAPE-SEA Website.
