Balancing the worlds of dancey, club-ready electronic pop and introspective moody lyricism for everyone at home, Los Angeles-based Canadian artist Maggie Szabo keeps things upbeat on her new release “Worth the Weight.”

Following as many as seven singles this year including “I Don’t Need You” and “Looks Like Heaven,” Szabo sings about love and taking chances on her latest glimmering track, produced by Los Angeles musician Sam Hanson. She says, “I want it to be music people can have fun listening to, whether it’s working out, running, partying, or just music you can dance to while you’re putting on your makeup.”

Although she’s been releasing songs from as early as 2014, one of Szabo’s best-known tracks has been 2017’s “Don’t Give Up,” which encourages equality across the spectrum of gender. Last year, Szabo also leveled up with a hit called “Sayonara,” which has over three million hits on Spotify. Her 2018 collaboration with Dutch DJ-producer Julian Calor, too, has earned a spot on mixes by top-tier EDM artists such as Hardwell.

Interestingly, Szabo also co-wrote Indian-origin singer Shannon K‘s new song “Run.” The singer-songwriter says about she got introduced to Shannon K in L.A. via a friend and producer. “What I really love about Shannon is that she stands for something, and our goal for her latest single was to write an empowering anthem. I love working with artists who want to use their voice to make a difference,” she says about the association. In addition to an upcoming collaboration with British producer Oli Harper slated for November release, Szabo adds that there’s one project she’s “super excited about.”

When things ease with the current pandemic, writing with peers in Europe and performing in different countries is next on the cards. “This whole year has definitely been a learning experience, and it has taught me a lot about myself as a writer, and the power of being self-sufficient when it comes to writing and recording. I’m thankful for what I’ve learned, but I’m definitely ready to start playing live and traveling again,” Szabo adds.
