Update posted 4 years ago

Folks,

Thanks to your generous contributions thus far, we are nearing $1,000 on this platform with an additional $600+ given through other channels during this campaign. We are so thankful to all who have given, and we hope you'll join us on the GA Gives livestream at 1:20PM as EAKC is one of 41 local nonprofits that will be spotlighted today (out of nearly 200 that submitted materials to GA Gives).

We are humbled by your gifts, and we are grateful to GA Gives for them choosing to highlight our work. If you are able to join that livestream, feel free to share what EAKC has meant to you or someone you know in our community during that segment:

For 22 years, the East Atlanta Kids Club has provided a vital intervention in Atlanta’s socioeconomic divide by giving at-risk youth a safe place to develop and thrive during after-school hours and summer break. Our mission is to “build a promising future for the children of southeast Atlanta.”

During the current COVID-19 crisis, we are working hard to ensure that the following is true:

  • No one goes hungry: we have escalated our food distribution services, and as of today, we have delivered 13,000+ pounds of quality meat, produce, dairy, and shelf-stable goods into vulnerable households, serving our youth and their families, seniors, service sector employees, and our unsheltered southeast Atlanta neighbors. This food distribution is a weekly effort, and it will continue as long as there is a need amid this crisis.
  • Our youth continue to learn: in addition to food distribution to our EAKC households and many others, we have been able to deliver needed arts supplies to our youth, and in partnership with The Empty Stocking Fund, we are also delivering learning supply kits to our youth. Beyond these supplies, our program staff have engaged our youth in various virtual and packet-based learning activities, and we are continuing to innovate when it comes to program design for summer camp and beyond. We have work to do to support our tremendous K-12 educators and our families with preventing learning loss.
  • Our communities have hope: in addition to our food efforts and our STEAM-based program efforts with our youth, we are investing in the Brownwood Park Community Garden with the support of a generous grant from the Food Well Alliance, and we are using this focus on urban community gardening as programming for our youth and a larger lesson in resilience and the power of community investment in creating equitable systems of access to critical resources. We believe that now is the perfect time to anchor our youth and our broader community in the power of collective action to create sustainable grassroots involvement in all facets of our community life.

Ultimately, your generous gift empowers us be bold in how we tackle this current crisis, and it allows us to deliver food, learning, and hope to our community. For this, we are grateful!
