Ana Maria Alvarez

2018 New Movement Residency Artist

Ana Maria Alvarez’s work traverses the world of social dance, political activism, community organizing and art making. She graduated with a degree in dance and politics from Oberlin College and received her master’s in choreography from UCLA’s Department of World Arts and Cultures. There her thesis work explored the abstraction of Latin dance, specifically salsa, as a way to express social resistance within the US immigration battle and became the impetus for founding CONTRA-TIEMPO Urban Latin Dance Theater in 2005. Alvarez is thrilled to be a part of the first New Movement Residency at USC Kaufman and will be creating and developing the company’s newest evening-length work “joyUS justUS”.
